If You Do Your Own Packing,
The Moving Company Is Not
Always Liable For Any Damage

When you do your own packing the moving company is only liable if the dents, scratches or damage is evident on the outside of the packaging or covering. If you have a box that has fine china inside, and you receive the goods, fine broken pieces, you must keep the items in the box and call the moving company. If there is nothing wrong with the outside of the box, chances are that the claims adjuster will fault you for not packing the fine china correctly. The only way to receive a claims payment is if the outside of the container shows damage that could affect the inside contents.

If you lose a box during the move and it is not documented on the inventory, you will have no claim against the moving company. The only way to avoid this problem is to document the contents of the box and label it. Take pictures and make sure it is included on the bill of lading. When you do the packing yourself, you have no insurance that your property will be paid for if damage occurs. You are taking a chance by doing the work yourself. If you use a mover for packing, everything is different.

If your property is damaged, they are held liable. The only safe way to move is with a moving company that does all the work. You will select the right insurance coverage and let the movers do the work. If you want to make sure you do not lose anything in the move because of lost or damage, have the mover pack your property and load it unto the truck for transportation. This means you cannot move even one box or piece of furniture. They will do all the work and take responsibility for any damage or lost you encounter.
