Planning Your Move

Planning your move means taking the time to inventory what you have, what you will keep, what you will sell and what you will need to take with you in the car. You need to sit down with a mover if you do not want to pack and move everything yourself about eight to six weeks in advance. You need to change your mail delivery, bank and credit card information, change utilities around and gather any personal documents such as doctor, dentist and hospital records. Moving out of state requires more work than moving within the same area to a new location.

A move of any type requires some planning. You need to go through drawers and closets to determine what you want to keep or what you want to get rid of before the move. Waiting to the last minute to dispose of property you do not want could cause problems on moving day. Closets and drawers seem to be the place where you find many out of date items. Basements and garages need to be gone through as well. You will find items that are no longer needed or used, which should be disposed of before moving. Anything you do not want to keep should be disposed of so you do not have to pay to move something that is going to be disposed of after the move.

When moving day nears, you want to clean out freezers and refrigerators, empty drawers and place items on counters to be packed up. It is not wise to ship clothes in drawers or cedar chests because it adds weight and might damage the chest or drawers because of the weight when moving. Make sure all drawers are empty before moving. Document any flaws found on appliances and larger items. If you would notice any damage after the move, you will need to have documentation regarding the condition of the item before the move. You should have everything ready to go by moving day.
