If You Have A Claim And It Is Not
Resolved, File A Complaint With The
State Department Of Transportation
The Department of Transportation does accept complaint issues you have with a moving company. If you have a claim that is not resolved, you should report it immediately. They do not help you resolve complaints, but the complaint may cause a Federal enforcement investigation. You will be helping other people from having the same problem, because they will probably not want to use the mover that has a complaint. Movers are required to provide you with all the information you need to dispute a claim. The mover is responsible for providing a arbitration process that is neutral to both parties. If you are not finding the arbitration neutral, you can contact the DOT for more assistance.
For the most part, movers are easy to work with, but you might just find one that is less than corporative. If you request references and check them out thoroughly, you should have no problems. If you have a complaint about your bill, you will need to have all the information you receive starting with the estimate, order of service, bill of lading and all other correspondence relating to the contract. Having this information helps with filing a claim and getting the claim settled.
You can also file a complaint with the FMCSA. They will not be able to help as well, but the information you supply is always looked at when the mover is renewing their license. If everyone works together, others will not fall into the same situation. Movers are professionals and do like to have a good customer service record. If you use one that is not licensed, insured or practices safe moving, you can only be in for more problems than what you need during a move. Most movers will give you a booklet about your rights before the move, you should read this booklet and understand your rights before hiring a mover.
