Make sure you understand the
different levels of protection
available for your belongings and the
limitations on the mover's liability

Before signing the bill of lading, you should think about the level of protection for your property. If you have valuable items, you will need to list them on the bill of lading with their appropriate value. The type of protection you want for your property should be listed as well as the amount of coverage you have for insurance. You can choose the basic coverage, intermediate coverage or the maximum coverage. Do not settle for the cheapest coverage. If something happens, you will only have basic liability, which might not cover the total loss. You are spending money for a move and will probably not have much money left to replace something damaged or lost in the move.

Maximum coverage that gives you full replacement coverage is the best level of protection. You will have to pay for full replacement coverage, but it is well worth the money. The basic liability that movers carry is free. But has limitations for coverage. An example of basic liability is this. If you have two speakers that are valued at $ 1000 for the pair and they both become damaged, you will receive sixty cents per pound of the speakers. If they weigh twenty pounds apiece, you will receive $12 per speaker or $24 for the pair. This is a loss of over nine hundred dollars.

By insuring the property with full replacement coverage, you would receive the amount of money it would cost to replace the item if it was bought that day. This level of protection is the only way to protect your property and guarantee replacement if something is damaged or lost in the move. You do have to pay for this insurance, but it is well worth it. Just remember, the type of coverage you need should be listed on the bill of lading. If it is not, inquire as to why not and do not sign the bill until you have protection.
