Is The Consumer Typically
Protected Against Loss Or Damage
While Their Goods Are In Transit?

The consumer is typically protected against loss or damage while their goods are in transit if they are using a licensed mover. If you move your belongings yourself, you will not have any coverage. The mover only has basic liability. If you need more insurance to cover your loss, you need to have full replacement coverage or depreciated coverage. The basic liability pays sixty cents on the pound. If you have thirty pounds of damaged goods, you will receive only $18 even if the goods amount to $500 in value. As you can see, basic coverage is not good for the consumer.

Full replacement coverage starts out at $4 per pound, but you can raise that amount. Thirty pounds of damage would amount to $120 for $500 worth of property. If you raise that to $10 per pound, you would receive $300 for the damaged property. You cannot declare a higher value on a shipment than what it is worth. You can approximate the value of your property and a then buy an insurance coverage plan that will protect you in the case of damage or loss. This is the best insurance you can have for protecting your property. Basic as you can see was not enough coverage fro a long trip.

Two types of depreciated value are pound weight value and lump sump value. You will be protected by the basic, but the full replacement coverage will come close to replacing anything that is damaged or loss. The lump sum value and the pound-weight coverage's are higher than the basic coverage, but lower than the full coverage. These insurances have different rules for how the property is packed as well. If you pack the property, stipulations apply. If the movers pack your property, any damage is covered without stipulations.
