Are There Some Rules-Of-Thumb AsTo How Long A Move Should Take?
There are no specific rules of thumb as to how long a move should take. Every situation is different. If there are elevators, stairs and weather conditions involved, the move could take longer than actually expected. No one set rule applies to moves. If the movers have to pack up your property, you want this to be done correctly without rush. Transit in bad weather is another concern for moving. Bad rainstorms, blizzards and tornadoes can slow down the entire move. How ready you are for the move will also be considered in the moving timeframe. If you do not have everything organized for the movers, it will take longer.
The size of your home and the amount of property you have will be considered when determining the amount of time it will take to move. If you have a five-bedroom home all furnished, it will more time to pack and move than it would if you had a two-bedroom home all furnished. The amount of time for the move also includes time spent picking up another household if the company does multiple homes at the same time. If you and another person on the way to your new location are going to the same place, and if the movers have room, they will take a second load as well.
If you do not like this practice, you can mention this to the mover when getting estimates. You can usually figure a day of packing or two, one day to load the truck and the transit time. Then you have a day to unload. If you are in a rush move, it may make things easier and faster if you pack your personal items and clothes as well as toys and non-breakable items. If you are having a mover pack, let them do the breakable items and make sure you have insurance in case there is damage.
